Why Your P&L Report Is the Most Important Document in Your Business
Most Nigerian business owners check their sales every day but never look at their profit and loss report. This is a costly mistake. Your sales number tells you how much money came in. Your P&L tells you how much of it you actually kept - and why.
AvelPOS automatically generates your P&L report from your daily sales, purchases, and expenses. No spreadsheets, no accountant needed. Here's how to read it.
Understanding the Key Lines
1. Revenue (Top Line)
This is the total value of all sales before any costs. If you sold ₦500,000 worth of goods in a month, your revenue is ₦500,000. This is what most people track.
2. Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)
This is what you paid for the goods you sold. If you bought that inventory for ₦300,000, your COGS is ₦300,000. AvelPOS tracks this automatically from your purchase prices.
3. Gross Profit
Revenue minus COGS. In our example: ₦500,000 - ₦300,000 = ₦200,000. This is your gross profit. Your gross profit margin is 40% (₦200K / ₦500K). A healthy retail margin in Nigeria is typically 25-45%.
"If your gross margin is below 20%, you're working very hard for very little. Understanding this number is the first step to fixing it."
4. Net Profit
After you subtract rent, salaries, generator fuel, packaging, and other operating expenses - what's left is your net profit. This is the real number. This is what you actually made.
Three Red Flags to Watch For
- Gross margin dropping month-over-month - could mean supplier prices are rising without you adjusting selling prices
- Revenue growing but net profit shrinking - your operating costs are growing faster than your sales
- Big difference between expected and actual COGS - might indicate stock theft or recording errors
